…or…How to Stay Focused while Being Mindful Along the Way

Beauty Along the Way

Beauty Along the Way

It is good to have focus in life, to have goals and desires, to make plans and do what needs to be done to move things forward.  That is the only way God and the Universe can do their part to make things happen.

But sometimes, if we focus ONLY on our goals, we miss the opportunity to appreciate the most beautiful blessings sent us daily, things which are around us everywhere, right under our nose, just waiting to be noticed.

Just to give you two examples

Today, I went to the beach with my daughter and granddaughter, to enjoy a sunny day out of doors and just relax.

Stay Focused but Be Mindful

Stay Focused but Be Mindful

When we arrived, we could not park in the usual parking lot close to the entrance, and had to walk some distance to get down to the beach.  We could have complained about this, letting it spoil the fun of going to the beach, but instead, we walked slowly and patiently along, enjoying the breeze, talking etc., and taking time to look around and SEE and BE.  And we were rewarded with the beautiful works of art you see in the photos of the flowers.

Our goal was to sit in the SUN and enjoy the beach but we found ourselves facing a sky full of clouds.  That certainly would seem to spoil our day if our only chance at enjoyment and pleasure was reaching our goal of sitting in the sun.  But instead, we appreciated the fact that we were not too hot and enjoyed the wonderful sky paintings the clouds made as they changed shape, color and direction.

Just a couple of shots to give you an example.

So remember, goals are wonderful things, as long as they do not take away from our being mindful of all the blessings along the way to that goal.

And if , upon reaching what we thought would be our destination, we find things to be different than we imagined, or planned, we must flow with the new situation and enjoy it to the fullest as well.

All things happen as they were meant to, at the time they were meant to, and in the way they were meant to, always for our Higher Good.

Our job is to be grateful for all, and to experience all things with acceptance, joy, gratitude, Faith and Freedom from Fear.

Be Happy!

Happy Babas

Yes…that is the secret – simply Be Happy!

It is not what you have or who you have that makes you happy.  It is YOU and your Choice to be Happy which determines if you are happy or not.

Happiness is not something that “happens” to us.  Not a “thing” we wait to come to us from some external source, not something which will occur sometime in the future when… not something someone else “makes us feel”..not something determined by what we have or don’t have.

HAPPY is something we choose to BE.

No matter what is going on in our lives at the moment.

As it is something so vital to our healthy living and our progressing along our life’s journey, I feel the need to write once again even though I have already addressed this issue from perhaps  different perspectives in other posts:

Change Your Focus – Change Your Life

Choosing Joy

The idea of finding Happiness, of Being Happy, has been written about, talked about, sung about for centuries.  From Pirke Avot – Ethics of the Fathers – a book of sayings and wisdom from the Ancient Jewish Sages:

Who is rich? He who rejoices in his portion – Pirke Avot Chapter 4

The person who is truly rich is the person who is content with what he has, and is not seeking something “else” to “make him happy”.

to Bob Marley:

Don’t worry – Be happy

Don’t worry about what you don’t have or what might happen and Be Happy with, and appreciative and grateful for what you do have.

To Lama Yeshe in his book “The Peaceful Stillness of the Silent Mind”, where he discusses the thoughts which are counterproductive to finding happiness and contentment in this life:  “If I have this, I’ll be happy; if I have that, I’ll be happy. I can’t be happy if I don’t have this; I can’t be happy if I don’t have that.,  Only this will make me happy”.  These are all illusions and fantasies which bring us the direct opposite of happiness.

Being Happy is not something we wait to happen in our life. It is a conscious decision we make, a choice we make each and every morning when we wake up. And over and over again during the “rough” days – which there will be for sure.

Being Happy is the essence of living in peace and harmony and it is not something which is determined by some external force or person or occurrence, or by something we have or do not have.

We take for granted the things we should be most grateful for.

Appreciating, valuing and being grateful for all the blessings God has showered upon us each and every day is the beginning of truly Being Happy.

A simple way of beginning this process is to begin keeping a Gratitude Journal. Simply write down 5 things each day (before going to sleep) that you are grateful for. Even on the very worst of days, there will be things to write about.  It takes 5 minutes but the process will bring about the beginning of a “change in focus” which will bring you closer to “Being Happy”.

Change your focus from:

“have not” to “have”, from half empty to half full, from “bad” to “good”, from “don’t like” to “like”.

Begin living in an Attitude of Gratitude.

Try repeating the following sentence each morning as you wake up, just after saying your own prayer of thanks for waking up:

Just for today I will experience all in complete acceptance, joy, gratitude and Freedom from Fear.

Remember:

The Secret to Happiness is simply to Be Happy!

Message From a Snail

While out in my garden this morning, I came across this exquisite creature,

Message Bearer

and while photographing him, realized there was an important message here for me.  Look at the various shots, and I think you will quickly understand the message as well.

Notice the way the whole picture changes depending on what we are focusing on.- what our perspective is. What was  inconsequential  before becomes the center of our point of view,

and what was once of major importance, fades into the background.

Life is the Same!

The choice is ours-we choose where we place our focus-how we perceive things.  And it is our decision to make changes when we understand that we are placing our focus on the wrong things.

But change, even small change, is something which is very difficult for us as human beings. We are creatures of habit, even when those habits no longer serve our better interests.

Try making small changes first, like the sequence you use to get dressed each day (put your left leg in your jeans leg first, instead of your right one), put your shirt on first, instead of your pants, brush your teeth differently (start on the lower jaw instead of the upper one), put your shoes and sox on in a different way.

Notice how even these small things can be difficult, but they can be changed.  Once you have become more comfortable with small changes (do this for a couple of weeks at least, in as many ways as you can think of during the day), then begin to think of the bigger changes you would like to make in your life and go for it!!

And remember, the snail moves so slowly we hardly notice its progress, but it always gets where it wants to go!  Slow and steady wins the race!
