PURIM SAMEACH – HAPPY HOLI
I am obviously still NOT IN INDIA, but I can still enjoy these are Festivals/Holidays, one Jewish, the other Hindi, which have so much in common that it seems unlikely that it is coincidence. For one, as both the Jewish and Hindi calendars are Lunar, they both fall on precisely the same dates each year. They also have a historical background story which is very similar involving a bad ruler, a righteous person refusing to obey a command to bow down to the King (as I only bow down to God), the plan to kill that person and all those who follow him, and the final downfall of the wicked King – the triumph of Good over Evil, of God over man, etc
The celebration customs are also very similar involving changing ones appearance (by either dressing up in costume or throwing colored powders at one another ) and of course getting drunk and lots of dancing and just having fun. Both are extremely playful and joyful Festivals, and I’ve come to feel the energies of both each year at this time. Here are a few photos
as well as a video taken of the usually shy and quiet staff at the New Bhandari Guesthouse where I stay in Rishiesh…showing off their music and dancing skills and of course covering each other with the colored dyes
If you want to hear more about my Holi adventures, you can see both of these links from my India Journals, and see some photos which give you some idea of what “playing Holi” involves, and also what “avoiding Holi” involves.
Happy Holiday to ALL
